The Hidden Threat Behind a Simple Scan

How cybercriminals are using fake QR codes to steal your money and how to stay protected.

What Is a QR Code Scam?

A QR code scam is a type of digital fraud where a fraudulent QR code is used to trick victims into transferring money, revealing personal information, or installing malicious software. These scams are rising rapidly in 2025, especially in India, where UPI payments and digital wallets are widely used.

How the Scam Works:

  1. Scammers pose as sellers or service providers.

  2. They ask you to scan a QR code claiming:

    • “Scan this code to receive ₹500 refund.”

    • “Scan to pay the electricity bill.”

  3. In reality, the QR code is designed to request money, not send it.

  4. With just one tap, you approve the payment unknowingly.

Common Places You Might See Fake QR Codes:

  • WhatsApp forwards and text messages

  • Posters pasted on ATMs, parking meters, or restaurants

  • Fake customer care portals

  • Scammy job offers with QR payments for verification

How to Spot and Avoid QR Code Scams:

Always Verify the Source:

Never scan a QR code from an unknown sender or suspicious location.

Use UPI Safely:

If the UPI screen says “Pay ₹500” instead of “Receive ₹500”  cancel immediately.

Use Trusted Apps:

Only use official apps like Paytm, Google Pay, or PhonePe for scanning and paying.

Don’t Share OTP or PIN:

No QR code requires you to enter an OTP. That’s a red flag.

QR code scams are a rising threat in the digital payment ecosystem. Scammers are exploiting trust in quick payments and a lack of awareness. Always double-check payment requests, especially when scanning QR codes in public or from unknown sources.
